On October 15, 2013 at 8:12:32AM Philippine Standard Time, the neighboring province of Bohol was hit by a massive earthquake registering 7.2 on the Richter Scale. The Province of Cebu as well as the City of Cebu were not spared. One of the iconic Heritage Structures of Cebu City was badly damaged. The third level of the Campanario of the Basilica del Sto.Nino toppled over, sending debris crashing down.
The present church was completed in 1739/1740 it survived a revolution (1898), a direct hit during an aerial bombardment (ww2), countless typhoons, and earthquakes. The Oct. 15, 2013 earthquake rocked the tower and toppled it over in roughly 37 seconds.
